The Recipe for a Brighter Day

A Bit of a Goose

June 24, 2011  |   Writing   |     |   5 Comments

“The answer is never the answer.
What’s really interesting is the mystery.
If you seek the mystery instead of the answer, you’ll always be seeking.
I’ve never seen anybody really find the answer — they think they have, so they stop thinking.
But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom.
The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer.”

Ken Kesey

I just realised why I have a problem with “the best day ever.” Not because I don’t agree that we shouldn’t strive to improve and build on what we have as a daily practice. But it’s the word “ever” which implies a sense of finality. A peak experience, suggesting we have made it, we are triumphant over all that has gone before. And it’s the lack of humility in that  sentiment which aggrieves me very slightly. I wrote about these ideas at New Year, but this summer solstice, I am feeling it ever so strongly again, and as it’s a point that’s consistently overlooked, I think it’s worth mentioning again.

    Romeo:
Swits and spurs, swits and spurs, or I’ll cry a match.
    Mercutio:
Nay, if our wits run the wild-goose chase, I am done; for
thou hast more of the wild goose in one of thy wits than, I am
sure, I have in my whole five.

i agree that we are all children in the universe. We are all learning all of the time and to ever think that you are an expert at anything is very limiting. My favorite type of knowledge is ‘ experiencial knowledge’I believe it is the most true and worth while. carry on learning and searching xxx

Wow, every article I read of yours seems to be confirming all the questions I have in my head or what I am being questioned about. I am a very intuative person and I try to listen to it all the time but sometimes doubt makes me ignore it and logic and thats when I get things wrong or things dont go to plan!?!?! I am also very silly, many people tell me I should grow up and my husband often says he has three children and the oldest is the worst (me!) Also very often, my silliness and not thinking through an idea ends in tears and a lot of guilt but after reading this, I feel I should own my silliness and embrace it as part of my charm and if we dont have accidents, we dont learn from them!!! Thank you! ;-)
